Drive Products for Machine Tools
Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) presented three innovative
drive solutions for machine tool applications at EMO 2001
in Hanover from September 12 - 19: A new linear motor capable
of handling large forces, a new servomotor series with an
up to 25% smaller unit volume, and a standard motor spindle
as an alternative to belt driven spindles in milling machines.
These innovations are helping Siemens to further consolidate
its position as an integrated system supplier for the entire
machine tool sector.
While smaller than their predecessors, linear motors from
the new 1FN4 series are designed for high constant forces.
The maximum constant forces are in the region of 140 to 660
newton in the air-cooled version and 1100 to 4620 newton in
the water-cooled version. These motors are therefore suitable
for applications involving vertical axes without counterweights,
feed movements with high process forces, and continuously
reversing linear movements at high speed.
The rotary servodrives now feature the new 1 FK7 motor series,
a further development of the Siemens 1FK synchronous motors.
The new motors are particularly compact: their unit volume
has been reduced by up to 25% over the comparable predecessor
models. With high torques of up to 108 newton-meters and a
particularly favorable torque-inertia ratio, this motor achieves
a very high dynamic response resulting in shorter non-productive
times for the machines. The rugged, maintenance-free motor
design ensures high operational reliability. The new 1FK7
motor series is universally suitable for all mechanical engineering
applications, particularly robots and handling tasks.
The new Economy Motor Spindle (ECS) features a simple yet
rugged design. The ECS requires far less space than conventional
belt-driven spindles and, with its cartridge-type construction,
is quick and simple to install. The integral spindle motor
operates according to the synchronous principle. The spindle
is available in the two torque categories 80 and 150 newton-meters
with maximum speeds of 10,000 or 15,000 revolutions per minute.
These high torques in conjunction with the high speeds permit
excellent cutting performance, leading to shorter machining
times. With the Economy Motor Spindle, rough machining and
fine precision-machining operations can be performed without
additional gearing.
