Hyundai Heavy Industries FMS Retrofit by CNC Design Korea


CNC Design Limited in Korea are retrofitting a number of Mandelli machining centres for Hyundai Heavy Industries, located in Ulsan.

The machines were originally purchased in 1980 and form part of a Flexible Machining Cell including for machining cetres fitted with pallet transfer units, one guided vehicle, six part storage stations, a load station and and unload station.

Each of the Mandelli machining centres is being fitted with new Siemens SINUMERIK 840D CNC system. There are two machine types with equipment supplied for each machine including:

• SINUMERIK 840D 572.2 CNC Control
• SIMODRIVE 22kW and 30kW AC main spindle drive
• SIMODRIVE 611D with 5/6 axis servomotors of 1FT6 series
• Linear Scales and encoders

CNC Design is responsible for complete electrical design and commissioning of these systems. HHI's maintenance personnel are performing the installation.

Key function incorporated into our design include tool changer and tool management, part probing, pallet changer and machine diagnostics.

The retrofit of the four Mandelli machines is the first stage of the project with the upgrade of the pallet handling system planned for the consecutive year. HHI intend to run the system unmanned for up to one shift.
